WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Garcia (D-Miami) introduced a discharge petition to bring H.R. 15, the House comprehensive immigration reform bill, to a vote. He was joined at a press conference this morning by several Members of Congress and immigration advocates urging Members to sign the petition and pressure Speaker Boehner to take action on immigration reform.
“It has been nine months since the Senate passed its bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform legislation, and in that time, not a single immigration bill has been brought to the House floor,” stated Garcia. “I am introducing this discharge petition, because the American people have waited long enough for the House to act.
“With every day that passes, more families get ripped apart, more jobs go overseas, and more people get stuck in a broken, outdated, and ineffective immigration system. Our nation cannot afford to wait any longer for this House to take up immigration reform,” Garcia continued. “We have heard too many excuses and too much empty rhetoric from Speaker Boehner. It’s time for the House to vote.
“H.R. 15 will secure our borders, protect our workers, unite families, and offer hardworking immigrants an earned pathway to citizenship. Yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office confirmed what so many of us already know; immigration reform is a boon to our economy. Immigration reform isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do. Let’s get it done.”
H.R. 15 was introduced by Congressman Garcia on October 2, 2013 and currently has 198 cosponsors.
