For Immediate Release: May 22, 2014 Contact: Raul Martinez (305) 725-4157
MIAMI, FL –Today, Congressman Joe Garcia made the following statement in response to reports of secret waitlists and other disturbing practices at Veterans Affairs facilities around the nation, including those in Gainesville and Miami.
“I am deeply troubled by the recent issues at VA facilities around the country, including some in our own state of Florida. These allegations must be quickly and thoroughly investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Garcia stated. “This past week, I voted in favor of a measure that will make it easier for the VA to dismiss senior officials, but it is clear that the problems facing this department are widespread and pervasive.
“Secretary Shinseki has served this nation admirably throughout his entire career. He is a true national hero with a distinguished military record and an unquestionable commitment to serving our nation’s veterans. However, the time has come to breathe new life into the VA.
“In light of the ongoing issues, over Memorial Day weekend, I will be visiting clinics throughout my district and speaking with local veterans to ensure they are getting the care and benefits they need and deserve,” Garcia continued. “Our nation’s veterans have risked their lives in defense of our freedom and have earned nothing less than the highest quality of care.”
